Character: Hawk
Series: Seiken Densetsu 3
Deviance: 2 – An alternate universe in which Hawk isn’t freed from the Guild’s cells as he is in the original universe, meaning that he stays more or less under the control of Isabella/Bigieu until such time as her influence over the Guild is removed or he escapes. Assuming Lise has the faerie, for reasons of being terrible.
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Canon Used: Seiken Densetsu 3 (video game). I’m using the fan translation for names and such, as that’s what I’m more familiar with.
Appearance: Hawk is reasonably tall, about 175cm/5’10”, with about average weight. He has tanned skin, long purple hair tied back in a ponytail, and yellow-brown eyes. He’s generally wearing a brown tunic tied with a purple sash, purple leggings, brown boots, wristbands, and a headband.
Psychology: Hawk makes out that he’s a fairly straightforward person, and for the most part he is. He’s generally open person, cheerful, outgoing and willing to talk to whoever comes his way- it’s a good way to get people used to him, establish relationship, and gain information. That’s particularly important when trying to do the kind of work the Guild’s work involves, and Hawk isn’t too bad at it, considering that in the raid we see the only hitch is that the person they were robbing woke up at the wrong moment. That might also have come about through a touch of overconfidence, but for the most part Hawk’s capable enough to back his confidence and occasional moments of sass up. Besides, on the occasions that Hawk lies or needs to put up a bluff, better to have the confidence to pull it through than not enough faith and have people able to poke holes in it.
He’s a bit of a flirt at times, and generally ready to talk to new people and do his best to be helpful. Admittedly, this has become rather subdued after his imprisonment at the hands of Isabella, and he’s not as likely to run his mouth- but really, the things that you might run your mouth off about aren’t supposed to be the important things, anyway. That sort of thing makes it harder to keep a story cohesive.
Growing up as part of the Thieves’ Guild influenced this- the Guild isn’t exactly a great secret, but it’s still considered best not to talk about it in case of people who might betray them to people with the capacity to do something about the Guild. It’s important to trust the others in the Guild to be able to work with them, and to accomplish everything that needs to be accomplished. Hawk had his bonds well-established from a young age, though those have clearly been shaken by recent events, making it unclear whether they can ever return to the way they were. Eagle’s death and being unable to talk with Jessica has brought a rift between them, and this is becoming a sore point for Hawk. The Guild values the collective, and doing good for society over doing good for the individual or whatever it is that Isabella’s after, and so Hawk reflects that, valuing his friends’ wellbeing more than his own- it matters less what happens to him than what happens to Jessica, because Eagle asked him to look after Jessica but he hasn’t been able to do anything about that, and Jessica is, while less active in the field on raids and such, effectively higher in the Guild as Flamekhan’s daughter. What Isabella has done has taken out the way in which the Guild members look out for each other, turning them into fighting machines, and Hawk can’t accept or forgive that.
None of this is to say that Hawk cannot work on an individual basis, but from canon it seems likely he wouldn’t have worked on his own that often.
On a physical note, while Hawk’s capable of being still for extended periods of time, he doesn’t like it much, and tends to need to work off the energy afterwards. Being imprisoned hasn’t done much for him in this way, meaning he’s spent a lot of time pacing. It’s also left him feeling incapable and helpless, a state of mind Hawk doesn’t like much, and which could be preyed on by opportunistic parties.
Other Skills/Abilities: Hawk’s physical strength is about average; his greatest strength is his speed and agility. He wields two daggers, dealing average damage. Hawk’s been trained as a thief, so he has decent lock-picking skills. Exposure to the demons of his world and the general sense of Mana I figure most people in his world have has probably raised an ability to sense demonic energy, though it’s pretty weak.
Other Weaknesses: Hawk’s a pretty ordinary human otherwise, susceptible to the things pretty much any human would be- sickness, injuries, etcetera.
History: Hawk grew up in the Navarre Thieves Guild, a group of thieves and ninjas who stole from the rich and undeserving and redistributed it to the less fortunate lead by Lord Flamekhan. As he grew up, he became friends with others in the guild, including Flamekhan’s children Eagle and Jessica, brothers Bill and Ben, and Nikita, formerly from a group of bipedal cat merchants. Hawk was trained as one of the Guild’s thieves, appearing to be in charge of at least one raid by the time the game starts.
That particular raid went off with only a minor hitch, and the group made it back to the Sand Fortress the Guild used as its base without incident. When Hawk reported to Flamekhan, though, Isabella- a woman Flamekhan had found in the desert and brought back to the Guild- explained that she had made an announcement that the Guild was now to become the Kingdom of Navarre, and their first action would be to invade the Wind Kingdom Rolante to the north. Jessica talked to Hawk afterwards, saying that there was good reason for the decision, since the desert’s oases were drying up and the Guild wouldn’t be able to stay in the desert for long in those conditions, but Hawk snapped at her, saying that she was just excited about becoming a princess. At that, Jessica slapped him and left. Hawk stayed for a bit, then went to find Eagle. Both of them agreed that something seemed wrong with Flamekhan, and went to Flamekhan’s room to investigate. Isabella was talking to an unknown man with pale skin and red eyes, and Flamekhan didn’t seem to be paying attention at all. Hawk and Eagle confronted Isabella, who cast a spell on Eagle to control him and made him fight Hawk. Hawk snapped Eagle out of it by using the flats of his blades, but Isabella killed Eagle with another spell and summoned the guards, whereupon Hawk was thrown in jail.
In canon, Nikita broke Hawk out and he left for Wendel to ask the advice of the Priest of Light there- however, in this deviance, the cell Hawk was put in didn’t have the weakened wall and so he had to stay there.
He was unable to do anything as Isabella took full control of the Guild, through a mix of her mental control and killing those who resisted. Jessica couldn’t be affected, due to the curse on the necklace, and was put into another cell. She and Hawk didn’t speak much during this time, as Hawk couldn’t see how a conversation wouldn’t end up involving Eagle. Isabella took advantage of this, trying to work Hawk into playing for the side of the Dark Prince and driving the wedge further between him and Jessica. Hawk was less than receptive to this, but Isabella persisted, taking him to Rolante once the invasion was complete and the Guild occupied the castle and surrounds in order to try to work on him further.
This is pretty much the point at which I’m planning to take Hawk from. The timeline of events isn’t that clear, but I figure the invasion probably took place fairly shortly after the announcement, within a few weeks at most, and then it takes another two to three weeks- maybe a little more- for the Rolante resistance and the heroes to get together and taking back the castle. From there, Isabella- subsequently called Bigieu, as that’s her true name- and the Guild retreat to Navarre, Hawk with them, and Isabella would continue to try to turn Hawk into a tool she could use- and if he didn’t go willingly, to force him using the power of the Fire Mana Stone or use his life to unseal the Stone.
Canon Point: During the Navarre occupation of Rolante.
Post Plane arrival:
Some of the Rolante troops had escaped the Navarre raiders, and together with the princess of Rolante, Riesz, and the wind spirit Jinn, they made a plan to use the sleeping flowers growing in a field further down the mountain. This created enough of a disturbance for Hawk to get some of the way out, with a little help from Marta and Emil. Hawk ended up captured by the Rolante troops, but managed to convinced Riesz and her group that he meant them no harm and was willing to help them if they helped in.
Which involved getting onto a ghost ship and dispelling the spirit powering it, which then resulted in them having to escape from a volcanic island before it erupted, and then tracking down the other elemental spirits so they can reach the Mana Holyland and draw the Sword of Mana. So far, they've travelled to Altena to meet Undine, spirit of water, and also get intimidated by some knight in dark armour who may or may not know Duran. They then headed to Navarre, where Bill and Ben refused to back down while Bigieu made for the Fire Mana Stone and were killed for it, their souls then used to unseal the Stone.
Reality Description: The world of Seiken Densetsu 3 is supported by the power of Mana, coming from the Mana Tree- the physical manifestation of the Goddess of Mana. However, in recent times the power of Mana has begun to fade, and the world is changing- weather patterns are becoming more extreme, the desert’s oases are drying up, magic is beginning to fade, and the numbers of monsters are increasing. In this situation, there are three separate powers trying to rise up and take control themselves, and this is further unsettling the balance of Mana as the groups unseal the Mana Stones.
The Mana Stones have existed as long as anyone knows. There’s one for each element- Light, Dark, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, Moon, and Wood. Each Mana Stone contains a God-Beast, a creature that will bring disaster to the world if left unchecked, such as when the Mana Stone of Darkness was unsealed. That God-Beast vanished some time afterwards- a good deal of time before the events of Seiken Densetsu 3- and hasn’t been seen in the world since. Each Stone has a corresponding spirit that is supposed to guard it, though this doesn’t always work out as well as might be hoped. The areas around the Mana Stone correspond somewhat loosely with that element- so the country of Alterna in the north, where the Water Mana Stone is, is a land of cold and snow, the Forest of Wonder grows thick and inaccessible with the Wood Mana Stone hidden within, and the Valley of Flames in the depths of Navarre’s Burning Sands contains the Fire Mana Stone. It’s that kind of world.
Important NPCs:
Flamekhan: Leader of the Navarre Thieves’ Guild. Currently entirely out of it and locked up for- presumably- his own safety, or morale. Something. Hawk respects him, though considering everything the level of respect has taken rather a dip.
Eagle: Flamekhan’s son, Hawk’s best friend. He believed in the ideals of the Guild and the good they could do for the world. Now dead.
Jessica: Flamekhan’s daughter, and a good friend of Hawk’s. She’s a bit more of a realist and will give advice, though that doesn’t mean it gets used. She’s important to Hawk, and Eagle asked him to take care of her before he died, so Hawk feels bound to try. That said, the way things are, that’s more easily said than done.
Nikita: A member of a bipedal race of cats, Nikita left his fellows for the freedom of the life of the Thieves’ Guild. He’s a good person, and Hawk trusts him. That said, since he’s presently under Bigieu’s mind control… things are a little awkward. Or would be, if Nikita could handle a conversation.
Isabella/Bigieu: Currently the person actually in charge of the Guild. She’s clearly got her own agenda, though Hawk’s not entirely clear on what that is, just that it involves demonic powers. Controlling and manipulative, Hawk might go so far as to say that he hates her.
Jagan: Appears to be in a relatively equal position to Bigieu, but he doesn’t stick around as much. Hawk doesn’t really know him that well, but dislikes him on principle. What’s his deal?
Lise: Princess of Rolante, and leader of its military forces. Currently leading the team to obtain the Mana Sword, whereupon everything will hopefully be stabilised. Agreed to give Hawk a chane to redeem himself, for which he's incredibly grateful.
Angela: Princess of Altena, running away from being forced into being a sacrifice to unseal one of the Mana Stones. Strongwilled and hardheaded, Hawk largely likes and admires her.
