quick notes - for Another Side, Another Story
Personality: Hawk makes out that he’s a fairly straightforward person, and for the most part he is. He’s generally open person, cheerful, outgoing and willing to talk to whoever comes his way- it’s a good way to get people used to him, establish relationship, and gain information. That’s particularly important when trying to do the kind of work the Guild’s work involves, and Hawk isn’t too bad at it, considering that in the raid we see the only hitch is that the person they were robbing woke up at the wrong moment. That might also have come about through a touch of overconfidence, but for the most part Hawk’s capable enough to back his confidence and occasional moments of sass up. Besides, on the occasions that Hawk lies or needs to put up a bluff, better to have the confidence to pull it through than not enough faith and have people able to poke holes in it.
He’s a bit of a flirt at times, and generally ready to talk to new people and do his best to be helpful. Admittedly, this has become rather subdued after his imprisonment at the hands of Isabella, and he’s not as likely to run his mouth- but really, the things that you might run your mouth off about aren’t supposed to be the important things, anyway. That sort of thing makes it harder to keep a story cohesive.
Growing up as part of the Thieves’ Guild influenced this- the Guild isn’t exactly a great secret, but it’s still considered best not to talk about it in case of people who might betray them to people with the capacity to do something about the Guild. It’s important to trust the others in the Guild to be able to work with them, and to accomplish everything that needs to be accomplished. Hawk had his bonds well-established from a young age, though those have clearly been shaken by recent events, making it unclear whether they can ever return to the way they were. Eagle’s death and being unable to talk with Jessica has brought a rift between them, and this is becoming a sore point for Hawk. The Guild values the collective, and doing good for society over doing good for the individual or whatever it is that Isabella’s after, and so Hawk reflects that, valuing his friends’ wellbeing more than his own- it matters less what happens to him than what happens to Jessica, because Eagle asked him to look after Jessica but he hasn’t been able to do anything about that, and Jessica is, while less active in the field on raids and such, effectively higher in the Guild as Flamekhan’s daughter. What Isabella has done has taken out the way in which the Guild members look out for each other, turning them into fighting machines, and Hawk can’t accept or forgive that.
None of this is to say that Hawk cannot work on an individual basis, but from canon it seems likely he wouldn’t have worked on his own that often.
History: Hawk grew up as part of the Navarre Thieves Guild, a group of thieves (and ninjas) who steal from the rich lead by Lord Flamekhan. He had a number of friends within the guild during this time, including Flamekhan’s children Eagle and Jessica, former merchant cat Nikita, and the twins Bill and Ben, though he seems to have been closest to Eagle and Jessica.
One night, after a raid in Sultan (Navarre’s major city), Hawk returned to the guild to find that an announcement had been made that the Guild was now to become the Navarre Kingdom, and to invade the Wind Kingdom of Rolante to build a new base there. Jessica talked to him afterwards, saying that there was good reason for the decision, since the desert’s oases were drying up, but Hawk snapped at her, saying that she was just excited about becoming a princess. At that, Jessica slapped him and left. Hawk stayed for a bit, then went to find Eagle. Both of them agreed that something seemed wrong with Flamekhan, and went to Flamekhan’s room to investigate. Isabella was talking to an unknown man with pale skin and red eyes, and Flamekhan didn’t seem to be paying attention at all. Hawk and Eagle confronted Isabella, who cast a spell on Eagle to control him and made him fight Hawk. Hawk snapped Eagle out of it by using the flats of his blades, but Isabella killed Eagle with another spell and summoned the guards, whereupon Hawk was thrown in jail.
Isabella visited him in jail, to tell him that she had placed a cursed necklace on Jessica that would kill her if Hawk told her the truth, leaving him unable to talk about what had really happened when Jessica came to visit. He was eventually busted out when Nikita bombed open a cracked wall at the back of the jail. Nikita told Hawk that, though he didn’t know of a way to remove the necklace, but possibly the Priest of Light in Wendel might. With that information, Hawk set off for Wendel, taking passage on a ship from Sultan to Jad, the closest port.
However, the beastmen of the Moonlight Forest had made a move for vengeance, taking over the city of Jad some little while before Hawk arrived there. There was a hole in their control of paths in and out of the city, so when night fell, Hawk slipped past the guards, and headed for the cave leading to Wendel. The way was blocked, however, and he stayed in the village of Astoria to consider his options until he saw a ball of light. Wondering at it, he chased it, to find it was a faerie from the Holyland, come to speak with the Priest of Light about the deterioration of the Mana Tree and Mana. She was able to break the barrier and Hawk passed through the Cave of Waterfalls, encountering others on the - Angela, the princess of Altena who was looking for a way to learn magic, Kevin of the Beast Kingdom seeking a way to revive his dead friend (a wolf pup called Karl), Duran from the Kingdom of Forcena who sought strength, Lise from Rolante seeking a way to win back her kingdom, and Carlie the Priest of Light’s granddaughter. The Priest of Light told them that he did not know a way to fulfil any desires, except perhaps the faerie’s- if they gathered all the Mana spirits, of which there were eight, travelled to the Mana Holyland, and drew the Mana Sword before the Tree withered away completely, they might stand a chance of reversing the disappearance of Mana and perhaps even have their wishes fulfilled by the Goddess of Mana.
The group sought the Spirit of Light first, since it had been sighted in the cave near Wendel and was thus the closest. This involved defeating a giant crab, but that wasn’t too much trouble. The troublesome part was really when they were captured by beastmen on the way back, and jailed in Jad. Fortunately, the guard was easily distracted, and the group caught a ship out of there to Maia, from where they intended to travel to Forcena’s capital. Unfortunately, Altenan forces blew up the bridge between Maia and Forcena, so they had to travel by cannon and find the gunpowder for the cannon, through which they also managed to find the Earth Spirit Gnome. They got to Forcena and found themselves in the middle of an invasion, which they managed to foil, and got information about the location of the Wind Spirit.
Since the Wind Spirit was in part of the Wind Kingdom, this involved freeing the country from the Navarre invaders, all of who were under Isabella’s control at that point. The group fought their way up to the top of the castle, where they had to fight Hawk’s old friends Bill and Ben, and where Isabella revealed herself as Bigieu, and working for the Dark Prince. Hawk took out his daggers to take revenge for Eagle, but Bigieu reminded him of the cursed necklace, and Hawk stopped. The group then went to the port to catch a shop back to Maia, but it turned out to be a ghost ship. Angela was turned into a ghost, and the others had to defeat the spirit in control of the ship to free her and thereby the Spirit of Darkness- and the ship. The group ended up on a volcanic island, and went looking for a seafaring turtle to take them away before the volcano erupted. The turtle got them to Maia and they went to see King Richard again, who told them where the other four Spirits could be found.
Their next destination was Altena, which was freezing cold, but reasonably uneventful except for running into the Dark Knight, who left them with three robots to fight. After that, they headed for the Valley of Flames in Navarre, and found Bigieu, Jessica- sans necklace, at this point- and Bill and Ben. Bigieu hustled Jessica into the valley, leaving Bill and Ben to fight the group. In this fight, Bill and Ben died, adding another mark against Bigieu. Hawk and the others pursued Bigieu into the Valley of Flames, stopping at a bridge, where Bigieu threatened to push Jessica into the flames if they pursued her further. Fortunately, Nikita had been following the group and was able to distract Bigieu into dropping Jessica with a dart. Hawk seized the opportunity, getting between Jessica and Bigieu, and Nikita promised to look after Jessica, heading away while the group went after Bigieu. They were unable to stop Bigieu from unsealing the Fire Mana Stone- she used Bill and Ben’s souls to do that- but Salamander joined them, and they went off in search of Luna in the Moonlit Forest and Dryad in the Lampflower Forest.
With all eight spirits with them, the group then headed to the Isle of Oblivion to open the portal to the Holyland. It failed the first time, and succeeded on the second- but rose into the sky, and the faerie realised that for that to happen, the Mana Stones’ energies must have been released. The group were knocked out by an attack from the first group of foes to go through, and had to make their own way up once they woke up by finding the Father Daughter of the Winged Ones, a white dragon, in Rolante. There was evidence that the three groups had arrived before them, but Hawk and the others remained mostly unhindered while making their way to the Mana Tree- even, it seemed, as Hawk reached out to try to draw the Sword of Mana.
At first the Sword didn't respond, but with encouragement from the faerie, Hawk drew strength from the Mana Stones and finally took the Sword in hand. This solved nothing, however- the faerie had vanished, and with her any ideas Hawk had for how to use the sword. The Goddess appeared, begging Hawk to save the faerie, and so the group returned to the entrance of the Holyland- to find Bigieu and Jagan there with the unconscious faerie. The two demanded Hawk’s group come to the Sand Fortress to exchange the Sword for the faerie’s life. Without another option, the group did so, and Jagan took possession of the Sword, which changed to reflect its wielder’s heart. Bigieu and Jagan then vanished, and the faerie awoke, alerting Hawk and the others to the fact that the Mana Stones were beginning to crack, releasing the God-Beasts from inside them.
Hawk and the others therefore set out to defeat the God-Beasts before they could wreak havoc upon the world. Seven God-Beasts and their locations were known, and slain, but the last presented more of a problem. That God-Beast had been released in earlier times, and since disappeared.
Without further leads, the group headed to the Ancient City Pedan, to see what goods they could buy there, and encountered a scholar who claimed to have discovered the location of the Mana Stone of Darkness- the Dark Cave, on an island northeast of Rolante. Fully stocked and provisioned, the group headed there, and found the Mana Stone standing there- strangely uncracked. Mere moments after their arrival, though, huge cracks broke through the Stone, and the group prepared to take down the God-Beast.
With that achieved, everyone took the time for a breather- but the faerie had realised something terrible. With each God-Beast defeated, the Sword had gained the power of that God-Beast- and now, that power rested in the hands of Bigieu’s master, the Dark Prince. The group forged ahead, defeating both Jagan and Bigieu before they found the Dark Prince- who consumed the Mana Sword before their eyes. With that power within him, their fate seemed certain- and then there came a crackling sound and a bright light; the Goddess perhaps attempting one final attack.
Angered by this, the Dark Prince took off for the Holyland, and Hawk and the others followed swiftly- but not quickly enough to prevent the Dark Prince from cutting down the Mana Tree. In sorrow, the faerie attempted to fight against him- but the Dark Prince struck her down, and then the rest of the group, assuming his form as the Archdemon. However, by the power of the Sword of Mana- by hope- Hawk and the others were restored, and fought fiercely, finally bringing the Archdemon down.
Despite the defeat, the Mana Tree could not be revived, and the Goddess and Mana were doomed to fade. But the faerie and Goddess appeared once more, to reassure the group, and to give them a story to tell their descendants- that the faerie was, in truth, the Tree’s seed, and in time she would grow to become the new Mana Goddess, and the power of Mana would return with her.
With this assurance, Hawk and the others returned to the world below. Jessica was still in Dean, much better by this time, and now they returned to the Sand Fortress, where Lord Flamekhan greeted them kindly, having been returned to his own mind. He spoke of his intention to make the Guild strong again- a Guild for the people, not just one group- and Jessica and Hawk agreed. With this in mind, they set first to rebuilding the Guild, and then beginning to expand.
